Suicide risk highest in men with low IQs

  • Comment

Men with low IQ scores in their youth are significantly more likely to attempt suicide later in life than those with the highest IQ scores, a large study has found.

The research, involving more than 1.1 million men born in Sweden from 1950 to 1976, found men in the lowest IQ group were almost nine times more likely to have a hospital admission for attempted suicide as men in the highest IQ group.

“A greater understanding of mechanisms underlying these associations may provide opportunities and strategies for prevention,” the authors said online in the British Medical Journal.
