Support key for bereaved parents

  • Comment
Nurses who attend the funeral of a child who has died from cancer or send a card on the anniversary of the death provide invaluable support to bereaved parents, University of Salford researchers have found.

Their year-long study of parents who had lost a child under 16 to cancer also revealed the need for continued contact with healthcare professionals immediately after the child’s death and more information about support networks.

The authors said that establishing a database of bereaved parents and setting up a nurse-led support service for both parents and siblings could help families come to terms with their loss.
