The big question: should 'excellent' nurses be paid more than others?


Robert Francis QC has recommended that the Agenda for Change pay framework should be adapted so nurses who “demonstrate a commitment to patient care” are paid more than others.

Mr Francis’ landmark report from the Mid Staffordshire Foundation Trust public inquiry suggested nurses should be rewarded and “incentivised” for showing the right skills, such as compassion and good care.

Mr Francis said that as well as showing a commitment to patient care nurses who also recognised the priority that dignity and respect of patients deserved could be rewarded under the existing Agenda for Change pay framework.

  • The question is who decides who is "demonstrating a commitment to patient care"? If its Management, my guess is that it would be a deeply flawed system, as they like to promote people who scratch their backs and don't challenge the management system.But tend to ignore the people who really do all the hard graft on a ward or in a department.

  • This is so wrong. I'm a manager, and I agree with Penny. It's too subjective and leaves nurses at the mercy of their local management, who may not be the best judge.

    Why don't we just pay all nurses a fair wage? How can we have this suggestion, and then in another, talk of cutting A4C T&Cs and downgrading staff?
