Two nurses were reportedly attacked following an assault on a 70-year-old heart patient asleep in hospital.

Violet Hughes was on the coronary ward of the Prince Charles Hospital in Merthyr Tydfil, south Wales, according to a South Wales Echo report.

It says that she awoke to find a man, possibly a fellow patient, covering her mouth with his hand. Two nurses were also reportedly attacked after she screamed for help.

Mrs Hughes suffered bruising to an eye and her arms. Says a Cwm Taf NHS Trust trust spokeswoman: ‘An incident occurred on Saturday which involved Mrs Hughes. The trust is taking this incident very seriously, and an investigation is under way.’
