Unemployment rises in graduates

  • Comment
Unemployment among graduate nurses is increasing, information released in the Commons confirmed last week.

Junior health minister Ann Keen revealed the percentage of nursing or midwifery graduates unemployed six months after qualifying was 6.7% in the 2005–2006 year, up from 4.4% in 2003–2004.

The proportion of nurses and midwives employed in roles for which they had trained fell from 91.6% to 87.3% in the same period, according to the figures from the most recent annual survey of higher education institution leavers, carried out by the Higher Education Statistics Agency.

The remainder were employed in non-nursing or midwifery jobs.
