In evidence presented to the NHS Pay Review Body, unions revealed that payments for working unsocial hours were likely to be phased in over the next three years.

The new system is similar to the existing one but will not be capped above Agenda for Change band 6.

Payments will gradually change over the new periods until the scheme is fully in place in April 2011.

Alistair Henderson, deputy director of NHS Employers, said: ‘This is to make the
sure that the amount of people on pay protection is as small as possible.’

He added: ‘It is better to have a smooth landing rather than a jerky one – there are benefits to everybody in that.’
