Viral meningitis warning issued

  • Comment
Experts have warned health workers to be vigilant about viral meningitis, which they say is common but is often unreported.

Specialists from London’s Guy’s and St Thomas’ NHS Foundation Trust cited data gathered in Finland, which showed the disease occurred in 27.8 per 100,000 children under the age of 14. Although it is a notifiable disease, it is often unreported, the doctors warned.

While the Health Protection Agency was notified of 233 cases in England and Wales during 2005–2006, 2,898 cases were admitted to hospital during the same period, they add.
