Waiting room video cuts STIs

  • Comment
Showing an educational video in GUM clinics can reduce sexually transmitted infections, suggest US researchers.

Over a two-year period, all patients attending GUM clinics in three US cities were exposed to either a brief HIV/STI prevention video or a ‘standard waiting room experience’.

According to the researchers, patients shown the video had nearly a 10% reduction in new infections compared with those who were not. The strongest effect was on male patients and those already diagnosed with an infection at the start of the study.

These ‘low-cost, low-intensity waiting room interventions’ could be adopted by clinics, the authors said online in the journal PLoS Medicine.
