The information, to appear on the RCN website, will show how to identify and help patients suffering ill health because of heavy drinking. Five case studies, based on examples from across the UK, will also help alcohol nurse specialists improve existing services.
A group from the college produced the resource to help nurses tackle the UK-wide rise in alcohol-related illness. Carolyn Mason, RCN Northern Ireland head of professional development, helped set up the group last year, as reported by NT in September.
‘Alcohol is being misused increasingly by all sectors of society,’ she said. ‘Nurses who come into contact with patients for the first time, not just the specialist, need to know how to intervene.’
