Why join UNISON?

As well as joining forces with hundreds of thousands of health care workers, UNISON membership has many benefits.

By joining UNISON, you have the backing of over 400,000 health care workers and a team of professional officers trained to negotiate your pay and conditions nationally. And we make sure you have a say in the decisions.

That’s the side of UNISON you probably know about, but read on as you might not be familiar with all the other help and support we provide as part of our package of benefits.

Dealing with problems at work

Anyone can face problems at work, but if you’re a member of UNISON you don’t have to face them alone. Whether it’s discrimination, bullying, rotas, leave or sickness procedures, a UNISON rep is on hand to help, wherever you work .

We are also there to help you make sure your workplace is healthy and safe and to support you in case of disciplinary action, dismissal or redundancy.

UNISON can offer advice and help in dealing with investigations, if you need to write a statement in a case, or if you have to deal with coroner’s court cases.

Raising professional issues

Through UNISON you have a way to raise professional issues – including those relating to your code of conduct, safe staffing levels and patient safety.  We also offer you representation in any dealings with the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC).

Real help when you need it

UNISONdirect, our telephone hotline, offers help and advice and can put you in touch with all the services UNISON has to offer.  We also have a comprehensive website that is packed with information to help you in your studies or working life.

UNISON Welfare, our unique charity, offers advice on issues like debt and domestic abuse and can also help with financial assistance through our hardship fund.

Member discounts

In UNISON we also try to think outside the workplace.  We offer a wide range of member benefits including accident benefit for work related injuries, insurance packages, mortgages and a credit card, plus discounts on holiday packages and leisure activities.  You will also get a discount on your subscription to the Nursing Times.

You get tax back on your UNISON subscriptions.  Members of UNISON’s nursing sector, including midwives and health visitors, can claim tax relief on 70% of their annual UNISON subscription – and we will help you do that.

Training to increase your skills

UNISON opens the door to more and better training through own courses and our partnership with the Open University.  Whether you are looking at a degree, courses to improve your existing skills or develop new ones, or help with literacy and numeracy, UNISON provides members with training free of charge.

We have a network of union learning reps (ULRs) who can advise you and we have negotiated time off for training with employers, who will also pay for courses.

You will be part of an organisation that cares as much about the NHS and the services it provides as you do.  We are proud to be a campaigning union and are leading the way in defending the NHS and the jobs of our members.
